Baddeley and Graham Hitch proposed in 1974 that short-term memory is not a single store but a small working system with separate components for verbal and visual material, coordinated by a limited pool of attention. It has been revised repeatedly since and remains the standard account.
The practical consequence runs through several articles here: because the verbal and visual parts are partly separate, two tasks that both compete for the same one interfere far more than two that do not, which is why some combinations of work feel impossible and others are merely busy.
