How processing speed changes across adulthood
Of everything commonly measured on a cognitive test, processing speed is the measure that changes most reliably with age. It is also the one people are least aware of, because in ordinary life it is almost completely masked.
What processing speed is
Processing speed is how quickly you can carry out a simple mental operation correctly. The operations are deliberately trivial: match a symbol to a number, spot which shape differs, decide whether two strings are identical. Nobody fails these tasks. The measure is entirely in the timing.
Because the tasks are easy, processing speed is relatively insulated from education and knowledge, which is precisely why researchers find it useful. It is also why it feels faintly insulting to be tested on: the items look like nothing.
The general pattern
Across large studies, average performance on speeded tasks peaks in the late teens to mid twenties and declines slowly and steadily from there. The decline is gradual enough that year-to-year change is invisible; across decades it is consistent.
Crucially, this is an average across many people. Individual variation at any age is far larger than the average difference between ages. A fast 60-year-old comfortably outperforms a slow 25-year-old, and that is unremarkable rather than exceptional.
What does not decline
The reason almost nobody notices their own processing speed changing is that other things move in the opposite direction. Vocabulary, general knowledge, and domain expertise keep accumulating well into later life. Judgement about which problems are worth solving improves with experience.
So the same person who is measurably slower at symbol matching at 55 than at 25 may be considerably better at their actual job, because the job rewards knowing what matters rather than reacting quickly to arbitrary symbols. Psychologists sometimes describe this as the difference between fluid and crystallised abilities: one drifts down, the other keeps climbing.
What moves it in the short term
Before reading anything into a slow result, it is worth ruling out the ordinary explanations. Processing speed is unusually sensitive to state:
- Sleep. Short sleep slows reaction time more reliably than it damages accuracy. You will still get the answer right, later.
- Input device. Thumb on glass is slower than a mouse, and both are slower than a key you can rest a finger on.
- Divided attention. Background conversation and notifications cost more on speeded tasks than on accuracy tasks.
- Caffeine and time of day. Both shift reaction time measurably, in directions that vary by person.
Any of these can produce a difference larger than a decade of age. This is the main reason a single online test result should not be over-read.
Seeing it in your own numbers
If you want a more honest read on your own speed, the trick is to control the conditions rather than to take more tests. Use the same device, at roughly the same time of day, with notifications off, and compare across weeks rather than across attempts on the same afternoon.
What you are looking for is not the absolute number, which depends heavily on the specific test, but the stability of it. A number that swings wildly under consistent conditions is usually telling you about your attention on the day rather than about your speed.
The honest summary
Processing speed declines with age on average, from early adulthood, gradually. Individual differences dwarf the age effect. Knowledge and judgement move the other way, which is why the decline is largely invisible in daily life. And a single result from a short online test, taken on a phone, with a notification arriving halfway through, is not evidence of anything much.
